Disappointed that the manual was mounted to the seat in a way that made it impossible to read. I had to cut it off just to read it, then where do I put it?

I spent weeks reading reviews online and from consumer safety reports before I settled on the Britax. Reviewers on Amazon seemed to love the thing. I have been using it for three months and I detest this seat. I used it from 5 months old (17 lbs, 27.5 in) to 7 months (21 lbs). Let me specify some of the concrete reasons why so you can judge for yourself:
1. The buckle is positioned very close to the seat itself, much closer than any other major brand I surveyed at Target. Here are the disadvantages:
# The straps come out of the bottom of the seat, not the sides, so when buckling into a buckle just an inch off the bottom, it straps in between his thighs, not on his trunk. In order to get the upright straps snug for safety, it nearly cuts off circulation to his chubby baby thighs. This is a particular disadvantage if you want to use this with a smaller baby who just wears onesies. Without pants or shorts it left terrible red marks on his legs, so we had to wrap the straps in cloths to keep it from hurting him.
#The buckle is positioned too far out from the seat back to safely fit an infant, even one weighing 20 lbs. Because the short buckle strap does not allow the buckle to move inwards towards the body as the strap is tightened, there is always 7 inches from the back of the seat to the buckle. With a child who does not fill this 7 inch gap, the child begins to slide down and there is always a gap between the upright straps and his tummy and chest, which is not safe according to safety guides.
2. The chest buckle slides. Safety guides recommend the check buckle stays even with the child’s armpits. I fasten it there at the beginning of every ride and by the end of a 10 minute car ride this buckle has slipped down to his waist. Useless and unsafe.
3. For a seat that reports to be safe for range of baby heights, it has too few shoulder strap slots, meaning that almost always the straps are either too low to fit properly (causing the slumping/gaping problem described above) or much too high.
4. You cannot shift between fully upright and reclined without removing the entire seat, which is quite a process. I was willing to live with this because I assumed it conveyed some added safety measure. It is inconvenient but not impossible.
5. It does not snap out, and before my baby was born (when I was shopping for a car seat) I simply could not realize how useful this would be. My son is 7 months old now and it would still be very convenient to take him sleeping from the car into the house or a store. Instead we have to wake him whenever we arrive somewhere.
6. I have an older model Toyota Corolla, and it was nearly impossible to secure the seat level as instructed for safety. We had to use several rolled up towels. For this price it should be easier to safely install it level without jerry rigging it.
On the Pro side, it is more padded than some other major brands, which seems more comfortable.

This seat is visually attractive but the pros end there. The instructions that come with the seat are simply terrible. The illustrated pictures that are supposed to help clarify how to install the seat are too small to provide any useful information (i.e., they are about 1″ by 1″). Moreover, unlike other car seats that provide a means for determining if the chair is at an appropriate angle (e.g., our Chicco seat has a built-in bubble level; Graco seats have a built-in bubble level as well), this chair requires you to “eye-ball” if it is at the appropriate 30- to 45-degree angle. Personally, I don’t like having to place my son’s life in my ability to visually judge an angle. Furthermore, the instructions repeatedly cross-reference other pages in the manual. Thus, as you are reading the relevant installation instructions on page 18 you are then sent to page 30; you then go back to page 18 and a few steps later you are sent to another page. It is simply aggravating. Moreover, when you go to the Britax website it is exceptionally difficult to find the information you need (e.g., you have to find the manufacture date of you chair to be able to get the link for the how-to videos on YouTube). Unfortunately, these videos have close to the same level of detail as the 1″ by 1″ photos in the manual. Finally, this chair just feels flimsy. Thus, overall, I will not trust my son’s safety to people who lack the ability to provide an clarity regarding their product’s use. That is a major part of their business and if they cannot do that well I worry about what else they cannot do well.

We ordered this a month ago and just got around to installing it in our car when we discovered that the Latch system clearly visible in the picture and online videos is not included with our seat. This is a huge oversight. I will call the company to discuss further, but what a disappointment.

I like the seat cover, both the print and the touch of fabric, but it doesn’t seem to breathe well in hot summer day. I rarely give 5 stars, so go figure…
