The First Years True Fit Convertible Car Seat 630 is NOT a good carseat for infants in the rear facing position. BEWARE you must have a very FLAT back seat to get the “line level” to work. We would have to stick a towel or 2 under the carseat to get it to be level…thats not very safe. Our old carseat by Evenflo had a nice level system built into the carseat, really disappointed by the “line” level for the First Years model. You CANNOT adjust the straps in the rear position because the carseat will not sit flat. Therefore it makes it really difficult to get my baby in and out of the carseat. We like to loosen the straps some before putting her in or out. The carseat would probably be alot better in the front facing position but we have a long way to go on that… we dont feel comfortable using the seat until then.

The only pros i can say are the cushions are very comfy and the fabric is a nice color.

SAVE YOUR MONEY for the newer model…sounds like alot more adjustable features etc.

Because this car seat perches on top of a base, you must fill in the gap between the base and seatback with either a rolled-up towel, which shifts, or a waternoodle, which gets squished down over time. I found the latch extremely hard to fully tighten because of a lip in the plastic base, which overlaps where my hand needed to be to tighten the latch straps. So i had to pull the tightening belt off to the side, from which position it refused to tighten. From the front seat, I could push the back of the carseat (in the rear-facing position) so that it would hit the seatback in the back seat. If I can easily do this with my hand, wouldn’t baby be slammed face-first into the back seat’s seatback in a head-on collision? I got a Sunshine Kids after this and it fastened so tightly and securely in the rear-facing position, I wonder how any baby is safe in a different seat.

  4. This product gets 1 star because it could not be safely installed in my ‘99 Grand Prix. That’s a deal-breaker, ladies. I can’t solely fault First Years for this problem, every other convertible car seat I looked at had the same problem, but I didn’t buy and return those car seats, I bought and returned this one.

A convertible car seat in the rear-facing position is supposed to be reclined at a 45 degree angle, and there’s a leveler to help you get it right. The First Years True Fit, as well as every other car seat I looked at (save one), reclined to 45 degrees when they were seated on a level surface (the store shelf, for instance). The problem, however, is that no bench seat is level. While seats in minivans and SUV’s have a slight pitch (say 5 degrees or so), the back bench in my Grand Prix, and most other sedans, have a much larger pitch (we’ll say 15 degrees for arguments sake).

That means that I am supposed to prop up the car seat with towels and pool noodles (I’m not making this up, the manual literally told me to prop up the car seat using a pool noodle) in order to get the car seat to a level position. I would have been okay with this, if I only had to prop up the car seat a half inch or an inch, but I was looking at 3 – 4 inches. That is totally unacceptable.

It’s for this reason that I highly recommend the Evenflo Symphony. I went through every single car seat in the store, and almost all of them reclined to 45 degrees when they were sitting on the shelf, which would have meant a visit to the pool section to buy pool noodles. The only car seat that reclined further than 45 degrees, compensating for the bench pitch, was the Evenflo Symphony. When I installed the Evenflo, it was in the exact position that it was supposed to be, and it didn’t require any rolled up towels, newspaper, gently worn clothing, or pool noodles to get it level.

I don’t know if this is normal for a carseat, but isnt there supposed to be instructions for this device?
